Dare by EMMA WHYBROW is full of electronic dance passion. It explores a story of toxicity in a relationship which has gone so deep that the lead is even doubting themselves. The track is about redefining what makes them special and using that to build themselves away from this other person. The track’s message of daring to be alone felt especially meaningful. In a world where it can feel very hard to find a connection, walking away from a relationship is a challenge. It feels like EMMA WHYBROW explores this catch 22 through this track, covering the nuances of certainty and uncertainty when leaving a relationship that is hurting you. The confidence and bravery she showcases through her vocal performance is contagious and as a listener it is this level of conviction that immerses you into the track and injects this dance project with energy. It’s a difficult mix to be able to deliver an EDM pop banger with a soul.

However, EMMA WHYBROW nails it here. Something about the depth of her vocals works really well as a contrasting element to the shiny timbre of the synths. The two bounce off one another, providing a diversity in the sonic tapestry of the track that brings out the strengths in each element. It feels like the melody is made to elevate the vocals and vice versa. The way these two aspects interact with one another implies there is a seasoned producer behind the track, allowing each aspect to have its moment to shine, ebbing and flowing within the track’s overall mix. I’m impressed they’ve nailed this complex tone. I think dance music was the right way to go in terms of genre because it connects this sense of joyous freedom from an ex with the literal freedom of dancing like crazy in a club. I love connections between narrative and melodic concepts and this is a great example of one here. This track is perfect for a club night at 2am or a morning run. The confidence and bravery it exudes is both deeply personal and universal at the same time.
