Bestial by SENIOR DUNCE is an eccentric and bold EDM experience with some dancehall, house influences that complete its unique and bold sound. This mixture of genres allows more space for the vocals than traditional dance tracks. The confident vocal delivers the storyline of finding our inner animal and accepting that instinct within us. They are emotive and connected to the lyrics, exploring each theme with passion that is contagious to the listener. They do a great job in the louder sections of the track.

Along with some help from the mix, they soar above the house instrumentation to lead the track from the front. The instrumental is made up of these layers of synths with a variety of timbres. From shinty and ethereal synths that float around the top end of the track’s sonic register, to bouncy low end synths that develop the rhythm, the track has a broad and rich sonic tapestry. It is really cathartic to hear these different layers interacting with one another. The way the vocals dance around this deep rhythmic synth, for example, creates this beautiful interplay which heightens each part through the contrast of the other. The main motif of the track is this rising synth run which repeats on this futuristic, highly-textured synth. It feels like the guiding light of the track, connecting the different aspects of the track and easing the transition between different sonic evolutions. Later in the track, we get this beautiful distortion on the vocals, creating this melodic fuzz that immerses the listener further into the soundscape. It feels like within the narrative, this is the moment when you enter the club, surrounded by overwhelming and intense sights and sounds. SENIOR DUNCE is well known to be a fan of the kick drum and this track is no exception. The kick drum makes its appearance throughout, creating a rhythmic foundation along with the deep bouncy synths. The rhythmic energy makes it the perfect track to get you going at a club but I think would also be great for a morning run, to get the energy up and the blood flowing. I’m really impressed by this track’s ability to stay true to itself. SENIOR DUNCE’s personality and character comes through in spades throughout the composition and it is that charisma that truly elevates the piece to the next level.
