Improvisational music is about letting creativity find its path in the unknown. It's curious and unfiltered, and Blurry Face is one track that epitomises that. Ari Joshua on the electric guitar, Billy Martin on drums, John Medeski on the organ and clavinet team up for this single-take track. Released on April 25, 2025, Blurry Face is another rich contribution to the ever-expanding Ari Joshua catalogue. The musician's collaboration with two-thirds of Medeski Martin and Wood, masters of improv-jazz, creates a lively, textured track. Joshua starts with a bold tone, dripping with fuzz and just enough confidence to complement his collaborators. On the keys, Medeski works in some warmth and playfulness. Martin completes the spell with his signature hypnotic loop to deliver a magical narrative. Blurry Face blends the old with the new, merging relaxed jazz tones with the pulsating, soaring feel of psychedelic rock for a fresh and captivating musical experience.

It is brilliant to see such a seamless, flowing collaboration. Above musical excellence, what came through to me was a sense of chemistry between the artists. You can truly see their personalities coming out in the way their individual sounds interact.

With no structure to lean on, the three talented musicians feel their way through the track. They match each other's groove tone for tone, and the outcome is a raw, flavourful single. As the instruments come alive in harmony, I instinctively close my eyes, letting my thoughts float aimlessly as my toes tap rhythmically to the melody. If you love experimental music, this single is a must-have on your playlist. It's a testament to what venturing into the unknown can achieve, with intuitive tones that transport you to a different realm. Blurry Face is a hypnotic, gritty treat that balances jazz and funk beautifully. Reversible Submersible, to be released on May 23, 2025, is the follow-up single.
