Boulevard De l’Amour by Gianfranco GFN is a beautiful funk-inspired track detailing the journey of falling in love. This track truly feels like a mix of jazz, funk, and pop with the slap bass and syncopated counter rhythm giving the song a real rhythmic thump while the vocals give it a more pop or even R&B edge. The vocals are confident and bold, reflecting the joys of love through their energetic and excitable delivery. The harmonies further reflect this, with an ephemeral and light touch, adding colour and tonal diversity to the rich sonic tapestry the track has established.

They explore the higher end register of the track’s melody and also provide contrast to the depth of the lead vocalist. This variety adds emphasis to each of their vocals individually. The lead vocal and the harmonies are heightened in their impact because of the contrast of the other. I also love how the harmonies have their chance to shine in the latter half of the track, switching from backing vocals to a duet for a moment. This felt symbolic of falling in love, opening up your life to someone else and sharing each other’s space. Another stand out aspect is the subtle plucking of the crisp guitar. The guitar builds on the melody with each run. It backs up the vocal, which is definitely the star of the show, using trills and embellishments to add further depth. Along with the vocal, this subtle addition feels like the guiding light of the track, a figurehead that the other sonic aspects can dance and evolve around. The drums tie down the rhythm perfectly while also adding to the impact of the track with the distorted subtle hiss of the hi-hat. Instead of simply acting as a rhythmic backbone, the rhythm section feels like it evolves and changes along with the rest of the track. It is rare to come across a drum part that is so dynamic and changeable. This is incredibly useful in terms of ebbing and flowing with the pace of the rest of the track, injecting energy when necessary and also easing up when the track slows.
The sonic cohesion on display in Boulevard De l’Amour is incredibly impressive and I love the infectious confidence of the delivery.
