Burned Romances CS HELLMANN is a dark wave post punk extravaganza hailing from Nashville. The track is as enigmatic as it is powerful. It feels like by holding back the emotion and narrative at the core of the piece's DNA, HELLMANN amplifies its power. The track ebbs and flows between the verses and the choruses, opting for a more optimistic and emotionally connected tone in the choruses and contrasting that with this languid miasma of darkness in the verses. The vocals have a distorted style, changing their tone from moment to moment. This keeps the track feeling uneasy, the connected, guiding light of the track feels unstable and constantly changing.

This feels like a purposeful decision that leaves the audience feeling lost throughout the track, matching the narrative core of the project and connecting the piece to its dark wave influences. The distortion also gives the piece this feeling of crisp confidence with the fuzziness at the edges of its sound emphasising its beauty even further. There are several layers of guitar that define this tracks sound. Beginning at the base, the rhythmic guitar strumming bridges the gap between the piece’s melody and structure. It gives the song a sense of contagious energy and also adds this muddy, rich sound at the bottom of its timbre. It feels quite connected to the vocals in its cadence and style. This cohesion helps each element individually excel through their unified tone. The other noticeable layer is the lead guitar. Its sound is inconsistent, ebbing and flowing through the course of the track. This aspect not only empowers the track with its presence but also emphasises the low energy moments with its absence. Its sparse use leads to higher highs and lower lows throughout the track. I’m impressed by its sonic cohesion and charisma between these moments. You get a sense of a united vision throughout the track, communicating this enigmatic undertone that leaves the listener wanting more.
