CREEPIN/FURTHER (2 IN 1) by PROKLAIM combines a variety of tones and styles to create a track that has an identity entirely of its own. It mixed boom bap styling and South African Club Music called Amapiano. This is a strawberries and cream combo that is unexpected but works brilliantly. I love when these combos are created in music, it brings a new perspective to the genres we love while introducing us to an entirely new sound. PROKLAIM also does something very interesting sonically, they combine the tracks into one solid song, showcasing the style in two different interpretations.

This project is really all about duality and you can feel that from the way it is presented in every aspect. The first of the two tracks, Creeping, showcases a brilliant dichotomy through every moment. The sample has an ethereal tone, very much matching the title with its creepy atmosphere. It uses discordant melodic concepts which bounce off and interact with each other, creating this miasma of sound that envelops you as a listener. The rhythm is another solid aspect, creating a sense of juxtaposition against the sample, which adds to this duality at the track’s core. It has a solidity and consistency which allows the other musical aspects to dance around because of its structural solidity. The second half of the song, Further, introduces a more fluid rhythmic structure and leans further on the boom-bap end of the scale with some rap segments which really take the piece to the next level. The way the vocals switch cadences and move through the melody and rhythm feels effortless, although I’m sure a tonne of work went into crafting a sound that comes across with so much ease. It almost establishes its own counter rhythm which the rhythm bounces off and interacts with. On their own either of these tracks makes a statement, together they are saying something truly extraordinary. I’m excited to see what PROKLAIM does next.
