Front Row Review

Front Row is a bold and exciting indie pop introduction to YAFANIA’s sound. Often, artists take time to establish their sound, finding confidence through experience while releasing music. However, YAFANIA has found their voice immediately with their initial release. The track ebbs and flows in energy beautifully, matching the pacing of the storyline of removing yourself from toxicity, and doing the right thing for you as opposed to shrinking when confronted and just doing what is comfortable.

The video is another killer aspect of what makes this piece so special, well shot and with an articulately crafted narrative, it works in conjunction with the song to deliver a deeper experience combined than could have been achieved solo.

Opening with held-back guitar strumming and vocals, the piece initially introduces the listener to its sound through this tense, subtle melodic exploration. At this stage the guitar strumming is as much of a rhythmic foundation as it is a melodic one, each strum providing the backbone for the vocals to build on. The vocals lead throughout. With the space in the mix, they are truly allowed to shine in this opening. They round out the track’s timbre, providing a clear, crisp contrast to the edgy distortion of the guitars. Their delivery is subtle as if there are emotions held back. This feels like it amplifies the emotional tone of the song by allowing the listener to tease out the narrative from reading between the lines of the lyrics and vocal delivery.

As the track flourishes, the vocals and guitar are joined by this thumping drum rhythm, injecting the piece with infectious energy while also adding to the timbre of the piece with a new element. The vocals also feel far more fluid in this section, contrasting the restraint of the opening moments. This ebb and flow makes each section feel more powerful and distinct through its contrast.

This piece is a very impressive debut from YAFANIA and I’m excited to see what they do next.
