Green Tea by TRAINBOY is a beautiful collection of two tracks in the alt rock niche, exploring emotional highs and lows, ebbing and flowing from introspective to energetic. The first track, titled Green Tea is the more subtle of the two, showcasing the vocalist’s emotional awareness and understanding the complex perspectives the track explores. The hazy, ethereal delivery matches the spaced out, psychedelic mix. The reserved vocal performance allows the audience to unravel their own meaning within the song’s narrative with subtle emotional twists and turns peaking through, especially at the high points of the vocalist’s sonic register.

The production is great, utilising layers of guitars with alternative techniques used throughout. The crisp runs explore the corners of the track’s sonic tapestry while the strumming lays a foundation for the rest of the track to dance around, straddling the roles of melody and rhythm. The guitar solo towards the centre of the track is a really nice choice, evolving the sound in a more exciting, energetic direction. This shows the diversity TRAINBOY is able to achieve, while keeping an emotional and melodic through line. It feels more like a constantly evolving musical force than a jaaring mix of different tones. Handbags has a more shiny timbre, it uses crisp guitar strumming to form the foundation of its sound. The vocals are more clear in this track in comparison to Green Tea, leading the composition from the front and allowing the narrative to shine through. This shows another side to TRAINBOY’s vocal register. This bolder energy works equally as well as the emotional and introspective tone of the vocals in the first track. The versatility is impressive and it works as a great two song combo because the two tracks balance eachother out, providing a tonal equilibrium and creating an overall cathartic listening experience.

I’m really impressed with the one-two punch combo of Green Tea and Handbags. Together, they show a complex emotional range while also standing up on their own as excellent explorations of the alt rock genre.
