Lay Your Heart Down
Lay your Heart Down by Zhenyok Chem Brat is a neon soaked 80s inspired rock anthem. Zhenyok Chem Brat has done an excellent job of capturing the vibe of what makes music from the eighties so special not only sonically but also thematically as well. There is this element of spontaneity that comes through throughout the lyrics. The idea that we don’t live forever is present but not in a nihilistic way. The track encourages its muse to take risks and lay their heart down because life is so fleeting, this captures the devil may care attitude of the eighties and elevates the track through the connection between the lyrics and the attitude of the era it evokes.

The vocals were the first part that really stood out to me. They built this layered intertwining miasma effect that ebbs and flows throughout the track. They are mixed down slightly which allows the vocalist to hit their high intensity sections while still keeping a balance within the mix. The vocal harmonies are subtle, never overbearing, working hard to support the lead while allowing it to shine. Despite their ethereal presence, they provide a depth which enriches the track’s overall sonic tapestry. The melody was a surprise to me, I found myself humming it long after finishing the song, it is interwoven so beautifully with the rhythm giving it a noticeable boost throughout.
The bass line has this bounce that contrasts with the stings from the guitar, creating this great musical back and forth almost as if the two elements are speaking to each other. The subtle use of autotune on the vocals is another strong element reminding me of eighties artists but also modern artists in other genres like The Weeknd. Overall I’m impressed thematically and sonically with Zhenyok Chem Brat Lay Your Heart Down and I’m excited to see what they do next. Check out their other great stuff below:
