Lunar Decay Review

Lunar Decay by LUMA FADE is an alternative rock project with some dream pop influences. A mixture of energy and lethargic entropy is at the core of this project's DNA, and it is impressive to see how it evolves throughout the album. The opening track’s enigmatic soundscape reveals itself slowly, unfurling into this vast sonic mystery. The song leans further into this concept of dystopian fantasy and mystery with a vocal that changes cadences quickly. This volatility keeps the listener on their toes and allows space for the track to follow the lead of the vocals and grow alongside it.

The vocals reminded me very slightly of David Bowie’s work. They rise and dive down throughout the track, evoking his identifiable, emotive style. The drums use heavy reverb, each hiss and crash follows the track with musical tracers for several bars after its initial rhythmic hit. Each element makes sense in the context of an alt-rock project, but the execution is wholly unique. Spring Sobriety utilises a different side of the alt-rock landscape, emphasising a bright, shiny, acoustic timbre. It reminds me of a gentle Sunday morning, with the upbeat vocal performance and full sonic tapestry. Monsoon Morning combines the ethereal, enigmatic energy of the opening track, Passion Fall, and the stripped-back timbre of Spring Sobriety to form a track that sums up the ever-changing evolution of the project overall. The vocals in this one feel deep and heavy, contrasted by the higher register guitar performance. Together, they balance each other out to provide tonal contrast and juxtaposition. Their variety adds richness to the sonic texture of the track. I am very impressed by its overall cohesive tone as it switches and evolves in style. It is impressive that the album holds onto what makes it unique while having a melodic core that shifts throughout. Lunar Decay is a psychedelic and bold sonic experience that is worth checking out.
