Nothin' But Moonlight by DAVID ALEX-BARTON exudes pure emotion from beginning to end. Exploring the story of the one that got away, the track pushes into the corners of our mind, to that relationship or fling that we can’t quite forget. This sense of truly allowing yourself to think about the experiences and emotions that could have been felt perfectly explored throughout the track.

Although this song is deeply personal in its execution, it’s candid honesty makes it a track that any of us can relate to. The line “you’re not here but you’re not gone” feels hugely symbolic of this feeling of a person lingering in our mind, maybe even still in the protagonist’s life just not in the romantic way they wanted. This sense of fantasy and reality combining feels like it affects the melody as well. The harmonies feel like a great example of this, they come in and out of the track, elevating the lead vocal with their alternative tone. The lead has this gravelly honesty which grounds the track while the harmonies convey this high register, ethereal perfection which provides a juxtaposition. It also feels symbolic of this other person who got away. The ethereal tone of the harmonies feels connected to this sense of perfection we imagine when we think of life with them. They have almost transcended being a normal person through the lead vocalist putting them on a pedestal. I love this connection between the narrative of the track and the different textural tools it uses. The guitar is split into two main aspects. There is a solid lead guitar which utilises quick melodic evolutions and careful plucking to build its sound and move the track forward. Alternatively, the rhythmic strumming feels like the other side of the track, contributing a consistency and energy that allows the melody to dance on a solid foundation. These two layers intersect with one another, flowing over each other in a way which feels cathartic to listen to. This track feels emotionally aware and melodically consistent. I love what DAVID ALEX-BARTON is doing and I’m excited to see what emotional journey he tackles through his music next.
