The Imperfectionist by NOTHING CONCRETE is a beautiful and bold amalgamation of different influences. It showcases a charismatic energy and an uncompromising sonic vision from beginning to end. The vocals were the first thing that stood out to me. They convey the lyrics with such a genuine sense of passion and emotion. I’m impressed by their ability to ebb and flow with the tonal changes of the different tracks. They also have a roughness that feels completely connected to this sense of imperfection at the core of the artist’s DNA. The opening track, The Boats, explores the concept of freedom through the metaphor of free floating boats. It covers the joy of being without a boss or master to control you. The harmonies in this track feel especially meaningful.

They lend the track a sense of unity, almost as if every voice in unison is expressing their joy for individuality. This also separates being independent from being alone. The woodwind instrumentation was a surprise to hear but it totally works. It plays with several piece’s melodic identity, expanding its sonic landscape with an evolution that adds depth and richness at every turn. It sort of feels like the free spirit of the track, pushing the boundaries and defining its sound at the same time. Empty Whisky Bottle Mariachi Blues is a brilliant track that delivers on its name with this train of thought style. It almost feels like the long walk home after a disappointing night out. The vocalist has done an excellent job of capturing that swaying energy and this tipsy vibe is also conveyed through the drums with this rhythm that pushes and pulls in every direction. I also really liked No Force. The drumming in this one was brilliant, showing the other end of the scale from Empty Whisky Bottle Mariachi Blues. Everything is crisp, smooth, and clear cut. The harmonies are also gorgeous and charismatic here, working almost as a call and response with the lead vocalist, creating this intermittent wave of sound. Above all else, this track is authentically itself. The musical variety is impressive but the consistency of its tonal identity, even spanning different genres and emotions, is what makes it truly impactful.
