OPEN POISON by CARLOS UCEDDA is an experimental dark pop track utilising a bold and unique vocal timbre as well as some gothic instrumentation to create a soundscape that is wholly its own. The vocal is the first thing that is going to stand out to anyone about this track. Instead of blending in and attempting to flow with the other melodic attributes, the vocal stands out. For me, it’s impressive to have the chance to play it safe and take a risk anyway. The vocal definitely feels like a decision that’s not playing it safe. It’s expressive, bold, and innovative. It vibrates and plays between different melodic identities, creating this resonating effect that heightens its emotional impact. Its high register delivery is very different to the rest of the track, giving the song an almost orchestral edge.

The rest of the track has a more gothic, ephemeral tone that gives the song a sense of depth and contrast against the vocals. This juxtaposition lends the track sonic depth which enriches the texture of the song’s tapestry. The synth plays this discordant melody that creaks and folds under the mix. Its creeping consistency underpins the severity of the song. Something about its tone communicates the majesty of the track’s scale, as if you’re approaching a huge castle that dwarfs you as you approach. In the quieter moments, you can hear the piano peak through, providing a more traditional foundation that contrasts the experimental attitude of the sound overall. It meanders through the peaks and troughs of the track’s melody giving a more gentle tonal feel. It works brilliantly against the layers of synths, which themselves have significant textural diversity between their different layers. Some of them have a notable fuzzy distortion to them while others have a crisp clarity. I’m really impressed by the clarity and commitment to the vision CARLOS UCEDDA has displayed through this track. Check it out below!
