Power of the People by ZOOLOOK® is a smooth and rhythmic funk track with elements of soul that give the piece drive and levity. “I went back to the ’70s, pulled the funk from the fire.” The words of the creator ring true in terms of describing the rebellious and bold energy of this song. The ease and rich sonic texture it brings to the table while maintaining its core message does feel alien within the context of the modern music scene. Often modern artists have to choose between a piece that hits home emotionally and one that sounds great from start to finish.

Zoolook doesn’t choose, it does both. It takes the steeze of the seventies and injects it with modern production and confidence, sizing up the sound in a way that respects the vintage vibes it is inspired by while still appealing to a modern listener and getting its message across. It’s a delicate balance that ZOOLOOK® have absolutely nailed here. I’m impressed with its sonic unity. Every element in the mix bounces off every other in a cathartic and rhythmic way. The layers of distorted guitar morph and evolve around the crisp plucked guitar parts, creating this sonic soup that immerses the listener deeply. The syncopated guitar provides a beautiful counter rhythm that keeps the track moving quickly and gives the rhythmic structure more diversity. The vocals are crisp and clean, slightly de-emphasised in the mix, they work in tandem with the other musical aspects to create the sound as opposed to dominating the mix and overwhelming the other elements. They are used sparingly, giving time for the music to resonate with the listener without a direct narrative created by the vocals. This allows for a more universal listening experience, giving the listener space to interpret the music in whichever way they would prefer.

I’m thrilled to listen to a track with such a bold and varied sound. The vintage vibes and modern production give it a crisp and bold sound that is definitely worth a listen.
