Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue by MAHTO & THE LOOSE BALLOONS is an innovative alt-folk track with some Americana influences. It feels reflective of the reality of modern day life. Deeply expressive and bold at the same time, this project nails its tonal delivery and also makes some very interesting rhythmic decisions that keep each track bold and constantly evolving.

These rhythmic changes also allow the EP to communicate its own original sound through the consistency of these different sonic attributes. The first track Parking Lots, introduces us to the tone of the project with a confidence and energy that gets the momentum going. The strumming guitar contributes to the rhythm and melody of the track all at once. The vocals are really interesting, with a bold and innovative style. The lead vocal dances through the rhythm, followed by this musical tracer behind it. Unlike a traditional harmony, the secondary vocal follows close to the same melodic progression as the lead vocal but just a moment later. It creates this delayed effect as we’re listening to the track, giving the project an almost psychedelic tonal boost. This choice is in contrast with the other tonal aspects of the track. The rest of the song had an earthy rawness without too much sonic manipulation on the vocals and guitar. This mix of acoustic and psychedelic creates a wholly unique vibe that shows up across the EP and elevates the project overall.

The next track, Self Portrait 30, has a sadder tone. The emotional energy of the project bounces around from track to track but this is definitely an emotional low point. The plucking guitar style matches this tone with a more languid delivery as if the sonic aspects are one with the desperate tone of the lyrics. The track is a stark look inwards. The later tracks combine these energetic and introspective tones while also mixing the quiet plucking and bold strumming into one song with two different tones. This not only gives the track its own sonic signature but it elevates the variety of the project overall making a more unique and engaging sound for the listener. Check it out below!
