Spirit Box by LOVE GHOST is an ethereal and bold rock banger with a slow build and an enigmatic core. The track opens with this slow piano part that develops the track’s sound without distracting with bold and energetic delivery from the beginning. The fact the track is still enthralling at this early stage of its sonic journey shows that the inherent core narrative and melodic building blocks that make it up are beautiful. The slow start also allows the vocals to make a splash.

They deliver confidence and charisma while maintaining a subtle and introspective delivery style. It feels like the track allows the emotions of the piece to meet you halfway. There is definitely a spaced out confidence mixed with an uneasy sense of melancholy communicated in the vocal but there is still a vagueness to the emotional tone of the track which allows you, as a listener, to impose your own emotion onto it. In this way the track is both universal and deeply personal at the same time. The song excels as it begins to develop. The rhythmic aspects become more pronounced, giving the piece a driving pulse which helps to define its sound. The song doesn’t rush building tension, sitting in this sonic transition for much of its run time. As the track builds the piano moves away and a guitar comes into the mix. It has this crisp clarity that immediately pulls the rest of the piece into focus. This feels like a natural evolution as opposed to an immediate jump. The guitar picks up the melody of the piano and evolves it further. With the context of the direction of the track, this is in itself a transition to the even bolder rock guitar that takes control of the mix in the final portion of the track. I love the languid and deliberate rise. It shows a faith in the listener and a confidence in their sound that elevates Spirit Box beyond the sum of its parts.
