The Void is an Enigmatic Alt Rock Experice

The Void by TIDAL WATER is an alt-rock experience with a variety of tonal influences that define its sound. The track has a retro timbre with some bluegrass influences. This is an unexpected tonal switch considering it is Scandinavian based. There is a deep respect for a vintage American sound that has contributed to The Void.

The narrative of The Void feels like this enigmatic interpretation of this all-consuming void, sucking in light and detail. It feels like the song is written in metaphors because that is all that can be interpreted about this unknowable narrative consumed by darkness.

The guitar is an important aspect of the track that contributes to its alt-rock vintage style. The way it interacts with the vocals also gives it a psychedelic edge. It follows behind the vocals like layers of musical tracers chasing the vocals. This choice also elevates the emphasis of the vocals by giving them a contrasting high-register instrumentation. The guitar solo in the latter part of the track is a definite highlight that provides a significant tonal evolution to the track. I’m so glad they gave the guitar an option to shine on its own. Although it is very impressive throughout, there are moments in which it feels like the guitar’s main purpose was to add emphasis to the vocals. Giving the guitar a chance to shine shows cohesion between all the different sonic aspects of the song and also displays the experience of the producer at the same time. They understand that less is more in certain situations and that’s the case when it comes to highlighting the guitar in The Void. The guitar feels like a secondary vocal at other points throughout the track. It explores the melody through trills and runs that add to the track overall. As much as the vocal is the through line and the guiding light in most songs, that responsibility is shared between the vocals and the guitar in The Void. The guitar often feels like the only company the listener has in the beautiful, psychedelic chaos of the void. Throughout the track, it grows personality, forged through its interactions with other sonic attributes and its ability to ebb and flow through different sections of the track. The harmonica is an unexpected choice that adds a bluegrass americana vibe to the sound. It interacts beautifully with the guitar and their combination leads the track in a more psychedelic direction with the stark combination of influences coming together like strawberries and cream.

Overall, I am impressed with the beautiful combination of vastly different influences that meld together to create The Void.
