Venus is CARILLON’s second solo project, revolving around the beautiful ebb and flow of chillwave, CARILLON’s has created this unique, easy-listening sound. CARILLON originally developed the first track of the pair, Venus, by experimenting with a meditation, deep breathing cassette. The track’s origin feels like it adds to the easy-listening theme it conveys. You can feel the influence of the original deep breathing meditation on the final song. That experimentation and the ability to discover sonic tapestries wherever they go makes CARILLON great.

Venus has this ethereal and bold synth underpinning its melody. It conveys a sense of awe and wonder through its wall of harmony. On top of its foundation, layers of sound climb in the register, providing a contrasting depth of the main synth melody. The rhythm is built by reverberating clicks that cut through the mix with their clear, well-defined sound. The mix of the subtlety of the synth and clarity of the rhythmic clicks scratches a specific, ineffable sonic itch.

The second track, Moon Knob, has a slower, more grounded pace. The main synth melody is more defined. It meanders through the tapestry of the song, providing it with the slower pace that defines and differentiates it from Venus. The bassline mirrors the pace of the melody. It provides juxtaposition while contributing to the piece’s gentle tone through its slow marching vibe. This track reminded me a little of the Minecraft soundtrack that’s become a staple of internet culture. Its exploratory tone, gentle, subtle timbre, and melodic contrast make it a fun and cathartic easy listening experience.

Together, the tracks feel like a perfect pairing of energetic and relaxed easy-listening experiences. They build CARILLON’s sound, giving us as listeners insight into the holistic way they create sound, while also offering us two beautiful chillwave experiences that deserve a spot on your playlist.
