You Gotta Know by COLLABORATIONS is a beautiful and relaxed seventies-inspired track full of warm instrumentation and candid vocal energy. The song excels in its ability to be singular and unique. Despite clearly being inspired by that vintage sound and having a huge amount of respect for artists like Carol King who have influenced their sound, they are building on the foundations of that into something new. It almost feels like they have sized up the seventies sound, bolstering it with modern energy, and preparing it for the modern day listener. The vocals are exceptional.

For me, they are the key to what makes the track’s sound so unique. I feel like they have built an exceptionally relaxed energy into every tonal level. The vocals rise and fall through a variety of emotional moments and there is not a single section where it feels strained in the slightest. I’m sure a huge effort went into crafting that sound and vocal palette but it comes across so easily it feels like I’m listening to someone just running through their train of thought, probably reclined on a water bed or something else equally seventies. The guitar also conveys this chilled-out persona. It manages to match the vocals tonally from beginning to end. This is no easy feat and shows the level of sonic cohesion between the different musical artists. The guitar follows the vocal with these licks, runs, and embellishments that expand upon the emotional moments of the track with their elevating tone. It feels as if the guitar is the glue, connecting the track between these different moments. It is also incredibly articulate, communicating these ineffable concepts and narratives at the core of the song’s identity through its delicate accompaniment to the vocals. The other strings are also a nice touch which ground the piece in a vintage tone while also adding a cinematic edge that elevates the track overall. This track is a perfect interpretation of what COLLABORATIONS was trying to achieve. Like the eccentric, cosy, and fun energy it is building on, this track makes you feel warm and fuzzy in all the best ways.
