Lullaby For Two Review

Lullaby For Two by STEFANOS BARBALIAS is a warm and refreshing acoustic folk-pop experience that exudes a homely and intimate vibe. The first track, Lullaby For Two, sets the tone with a slow guitar lick that follows the melody throughout and emphasises the beautiful vocal harmonies. The track reminded me a little of Brad Stank in the way the vocals interact as well as the instrumentation.

The two vocalists have a lot of chemistry and a united emotional vision on this track which comes across in the delivery. The vocals float above the instrumental without dominating it. They share the spotlight with each element elevating the other. Subtle strings are added at the higher end of the song’s register, contrasting the depth of the vocals and the slow guitar. They round out the sonic texture of the track.

The next track is a cover of the classic Beatles song, Across the Universe, a personal favourite of mine. There is a huge respect for the original communicated through the subtle similarities to the Beatles version. The track opens with a slow piano, picking up the melody of Across the Universe. This is a great intro that leans into the power the track has. The slow intro allows the audience to discover it is a Beatles cover over time, adding a sense of excitement as the melody reveals itself. I thought the way “Nothing’s Going to Change My World” was delivered, especially with the high register strings in the background, felt especially emotionally resonant.

The final track, Cloud Nine, is a beautiful piano ballad with a slow pace, different to what I had expected from the title. Cloud Nine symbolises a euphoric excitement and yet, this track is the slowest of the collection. This is an example of how different STEFANOS BARBALIAS’ perspective is on this EP. There is a gentleness in the beauty that they’ve captured throughout the project that feels unique and that is what makes the project a must-listen for fans of the pop-folk space.
